The two refrigerants in brief

R134a has been used in car AC systems for decades. R1234yf is a newer refrigerant fitted to many more recent vehicles. They are different substances with different handling and equipment requirements.

How to find out which one your car uses

• Look for the AC service label under the bonnet — it states the refrigerant type and the charge weight
• Check the vehicle's service documentation
• If you are unsure, send the make, model and year to a technician who can help confirm it

Why the model year is not a reliable guide

Manufacturers changed refrigerants at different times, and even within one model range the same year can differ by market, trim or build date. Treat the label and the documentation as the authority.

Why they must never be mixed or swapped

R134a and R1234yf are not interchangeable. Using the wrong refrigerant, or mixing them, can damage the AC system and the service equipment. R1234yf is also mildly flammable, so it requires appropriate equipment and handling procedures.

Warm air from the vents has several possible causes. Some are simple; others need proper diagnosis. Here is how to think about it.

Low refrigerant from a leak

The most common cause. The system loses refrigerant slowly through O-rings, hoses, seals or the condenser, and cooling fades. Topping up without finding the leak usually gives only temporary relief.

Compressor or clutch problems

If the compressor does not engage, or makes unusual noise when the AC is on, the cause may be mechanical, electrical or refrigerant-related. It needs diagnosis before anyone recommends a repair.

Condenser or cooling fan issues

The condenser sits at the front and must shed heat. Dust, sand, debris or damage — or a cooling fan that is not working — reduces cooling, often most noticeably in traffic.

Electrical faults

Fuses, relays, sensors, pressure switches and wiring all influence AC operation. Some electrical diagnosis needs workshop equipment.

Airflow and cabin filter

A car AC is a sealed system. If it needs gas again and again, something is leaking.

Signs of a possible leak

• Cooling that fades over days or weeks
• An AC that needed a top-up before and is weak again
• Oily residue around AC pipes, joints or the compressor
• The compressor not engaging because the system pressure is too low

Where leaks commonly occur

Why not just top it up?

Adding refrigerant to a leaking system gives temporary cooling at best, wastes refrigerant and lets the problem develop. Investigating first is the more reliable route.

Dubai heat puts car AC systems under heavy load for much of the year. These habits help you keep yours working properly.

1. Treat repeated top-ups as a warning

If your AC needs refrigerant more than once, it is leaking. Investigate the leak instead of repeating top-ups.

2. Avoid overcharging

More refrigerant is not better. An overcharged system cools worse and can stress the compressor. Charging should follow the manufacturer's specified weight.

3. Be careful with DIY cans and sealants

Refill cans do not measure what the system needs, and sealant additives can cause problems for the system and for service equipment.

4. Let the hot air out first

After a car has been parked in the sun, open the windows for the first minute of driving, with the AC running, to push hot cabin air out. Then close the windows and use recirculation so the system cools the cabin air instead of fresh outside air.

5. Keep the condenser clear

Dust, sand and debris reduce airflow through the condenser at the front of the car, which reduces cooling. Have it checked and cleaned when needed.

6. Don't use aggressive pressure washing

A strong jet can bend the delicate condenser fins and make airflow worse. If you rinse the area, use gentle, low-pressure water.

7. Include the AC in regular maintenance

8. Act on new noises

New grinding, squealing or unusual clicking when the AC is on deserves inspection. Early diagnosis is usually simpler than waiting for a failure.
